What is
Fashion?
Fashion is a general term for a
popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories,
makeup, or furniture. It is a distinctive, however, often habitual trend in a
look and dress up of a person, as well as to prevailing styles in behavior.
Well that is
based from the dictionary, but if you ask me:
Fashion is a way of expressing
yourself by dressing differently or how the ambiance of your furniture is, in a
way that you and the people like you truly understand. It does not have to be
popular or worn by everybody; it’s on how you want to appear on others. It’s
you and you’re unique!
In the early times, as people
were just starting to fill their hunger for knowledge and exploring the
Philippines they didn’t have night gowns, shorts, dresses, or sleeveless shirts
neither the Baro’t Saya. They only wore bahag (for men), some wore malong and
putong over their head. They were also bare-footed.
We can say
that this kind of clothing is primitive and has been forgotten by many of us.
But as we can see long before we were born, Filipinos were naturally artistic
and creative. Some parts of the archipelago, like in the Cordillera Mountains
are still using this kind of clothing.
As time went
by the Philippines was colonized by different countries like Spain. During this
time the Spaniards made the Filipinos wear the Baro’t Saya.
The Baro’t Saya is the Philippines National Costume.
The national costume for men is the barong, which is worn over a Chinese collarless shirt called Camisa de Chino.

The national costume for women is the saya, which is a long
wrap-around or tapis a knee-length wrap-around covering the lower half of the
body with the bare upper torso. During this time we can say that the Filipinos
were conservative and dressed in a way that they will be respected by others.
After Spain came the Americans.
They made the Philippines wear proper attire.

After the American Invasion the
Filipinos started to create their own name in the world of fashion. But somehow
we are still under the influence of our colonizers. Before we valued the image
we portray to others. People especially women wore clothes that would cover the
parts of their body that is not supposed to be seen, unlike what we often see
today. Men, women, even little boys and girls wear clothes that are not
appropriate for them. Thinking that this would make them look more mature or
younger, and for some reasons to impress to impress other people.
Now many Filipino wear different
kinds of clothes, and some people find this weird because its uncanny or not
like what they usually see. Some people wear clothes that they think suits their
personality. They were all black, from top to bottom. Some wear loose clothes and others
choose to wear nothing. I mean like almost nothing. Short shorts and sleeveless
shirts. Like seriously, is this for real?
Time flies so fast that people doesn’t
realize that fashion just come and go. One moment it’s trending and in just a
blink of an eye another style or way of dressing up arises. For others it may
seem cool but to some it’s not. Some sees it as a way for them to be noticed,
others just sees it as a way to discriminate you.
Fashion is not about what dress
you wear, what jewelry you have, or what style you possess. It’s on how you
carry yourself in front of others and on how you present your personality.
Ignore those people who choose to judge you rather than to accept you.
Do not dress to impress.
Dress to express!
